Understanding Theory

Game of Thrones depicts a variety of leaders and leadership styles throughout the seven kingdoms mentioned in the show. In the beginning of the first season there is one king that rules over all kingdoms. He unfortunately looses his life throwing the seven kingdoms into turmoil, each now fighting for their own ruler. As the show continues to develop there are two leaders that take the stage, one from the North and one from the South. These two leaders, Robb Stark from the North and Joffrey Baratheon from the South, take over their territories and start their fight against one another. Their leadership styles are very different, creating an interesting dynamic between their two kingdoms. Joffrey practices Theory X, while Robb practices Theory Y. While Joffrey believes that all his followers are dumb, lazy and unable to perform tasks without extreme supervision or punishment, Robb believes that his people have the skills and strength necessary to protect his Kingdom even in his absence. Joffrey countlessly uses fear to get what he wants from his followers. He will publicly shame them or even kill them to send the message across that if his direction is not followed to the tee you are worth nothing to him. While Robb on the other hand, uses his follower’s advice and guidance in his decision-making processes. He trusts them to protect his kingdom with out forcing them with fear and even leaves the Kingdom in their care while he travels to another Kingdom to find allies in their fight against the South. Robb cares more about his followers and protecting their way of life from the evil Joffrey then taking over the Kingdoms. He knows the Joffrey’s plan is to have immense power and take over the Kingdoms with no regard for his people during the process. That is why Rob is able to recruit more soldiers and talent instead of scaring people into completing his bidding like Joffrey does. Making Joffrey an authoritarian leader, while Robb is a participative leader. Robb will go into battle himself side by side with his men while Joffrey will send his out on their own while he hides behind closed doors.
